I have been a good patron of this hotel since the first day it opened. Last Friday, I stopped by to have a glass of champagne ($35 a glass.) It was one of those lethally cold New York nights where one's eyeballs froze after a few minutes. After I had my drink I reached out for my coat and jacket that I put behind the bar stool I was seated in, to discover it was removed. So I thought on a crowded Friday night one of the other patron would have moved it to a different chair and nearby. After looking for 10 minutes I felt uncomfortable making the guests comfortable by asking about a coat and asked for the Bar Manager's help. The manager looked around for a few minutes and told me that they could not find either the coat or the jacket. Next thing I know I was handed $25 to take a cab and that there was nothing more they could do. I followed up with the GM of the hotel who kindly told me that looking at security cameras was a violation of Privacy Act. Clearly, my privacy or belongings were not important enough for the hotel management, neither the fact that I have spent thousands of dollars over the last 3 years at their establishment. I create luxury real estate and hotel brands for a living and have worked with the best of all of them including Aman, Setai, Four Seasons, Rosewood and Mandarin. Never in my life, have I experienced a poor and uncaring attitude as I have at the Crosby whose room rates are right up there with Four Seasons. My suggestion is stay away from a hotel that is devoid of good ethics and desire to do the right thing as a company operating under the service umbrella. By the way, the coat was D&G, and the jacket Loro Piana, totaling more than $6,000 in stolen personal property. It is truly unacceptable for a 5-star property to handle the situation the way they choose to. Would I plan to ever return? The answer is simply NO. There are many wonderful hotels in NY city that value their clients and try to do the right thing in case of an unfortunate situation.
